Jeff founded Amazon with the aim of making his store as big as the Amazon River . Realizing the potential of e-commerce, Jeff quit his job as Vice President at D.E Shaw Company . He began operating from his garage in Bellevue, Washington. To test his business idea, Jeff invited his friends and acquaintances before taking the site Amazon.com online. Initially, Jeff created a list of five products (including compact discs, computer software, hardware, videos, and books) to be marketed online. He finally started selling books online. Within a month of operations, Amazon.com had got orders for books from 50 states in the US and from 45 countries. The customers found the titles they wanted by entering the title of the book in the search option on the site. Sales touched $20,000 a week within the two months. Soon, Jeff diversified into offering electronics, toys, tools, home furnishings, housewares, apparel, kitchen gadgets, etc. Amazon.com became a very popular site on the Web within the first four months of its operations, and received high marks on several internet rankings.
